Internship General Tips
What you need to know before senior year!
- Start early, think about where you want to go. What things you see yourself doing. Would you want to work in a hospital seeing patients with a variety of diseases? Or work in the community educating people? If you have a strong like in a field search for an internship that has these goals. All internships are pretty general but do have somewhat of an emphasis.
- If you have no idea what you like that’s okay! You won’t take these types of classes till the end anyways.
- Looking into internships early is a good idea. Allaccessinternships.com is great place to start. Click on a state and it shows all the internships for that state. Also http://www.eatright.org/students/education/di.aspx is another great website to look up internships.
- Start volunteering early and getting the right things for your resume.
- Work experience-find something where you will work near or under a dietitian. For example try hospitals. Nursing homes are a good place to look as well.
- If you know where you want to go early check out what they like to have in an applicant and try to achieve that before you apply
- If you know you want to do graduate school or the place you would like to go has graduate school you will need to take the GRE.
- The GRE stands for graduate record examination. This is to test your knowledge for graduate school, to see if you are ready for this level of school work. It is quantitative (math), vocabulary and written. These things you will need to work on way before you take the exam. Carmen sends out great ways to start studying for this.
- Have a back up plan
- When volunteering keep all contact information for the internship application process. You will need to know supervisors emails and phone numbers for all places you plan on telling your internships about.
- Try volunteering at one place for the entire year or for a few years. Looks great.
- It is definitely an overwhelming process. But if you start early you will be more than okay!
